WHANGARATA.
FARMERS' UNION MEETING The annual meeting of the Wliangarata Branch of the Farmers' Union was held in the school on Friday, May 11th, when there was a fair attendance. The balance sheet showed that the Branch was in a financial position. The annual report brought before members the importance of belonging to the Union, and attending the monthly meetings regularly in|order to give expression of opinion on matters such as taxation, shipping for products, railway facilities, trusts and combines, auctioneers' charges, labour and other problems which affect the farmer. By such regular attendance and the expression of matured opinions from every viewpoint on important questions, and by combined efforts farmers would be able to command the reward for their labour to which they are entitled and more equitable consideration wherever taxation was imposed. The report also mentioned that since the last annual meeting one of the vicepresidents (Mr G. Reston) had given his life in the defence of the Empire
The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows President, Mr J. Fulton (re-elected); secretary, Mr P. J. Cooney (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs H. W. Laing and J. W. Whiteside ; auditor, Mr W. Rapson (re-elected). Delegate to Conference, (Mr J. Fulton). The President made a special appeal to members to pay their subscriptions promptly, and thereby enabling the Branch to carry on its good work in the interest of not only the farmers but of the whole of the community.
