MEW PRESTON FAREWELLED , A very pleasant entertainment was held at the residence of Mr J. Crosby, at Tuke Tuke, on Friday evening;, 11th in«t., the occasion being a local send-off to Mr W. Preston, of this district, who, volunteering for active service, has joined the 30th Reinforcements. About 40 people were present., and the time passed all too quickly everyone being more than pleased ! with the excellent arrangements j made for their enjoyment by the i gonial host and hostess. The evening was spent in pkying various games usual on such occasions, and musical items contributed by Misses ' Glover, Brodein, and Chalmers, | Messrs Barton, Summerville, R. Irwin, and a recitation by Mr II Preston were very greatly appreciated. During the evening the Rev S. Nixon, in making the presentation to Mr Preston a money belt ami pair of brushes on behalf of those present, testified to the many sterling qualities of the departing soldierqualities which have causal him to be so generally and so deservedly popular. Mr Preston v< iy .suitably ro sponded. j An exceptionally pleasant and onjoyable evening was brought to a j closo by the singing of "Auld Lang | Svne" and "God Save tho King."

(Bee also page 1 ) RAILWAY PORTER KILLED j Whilst engaged at Mercer station i yesterday (M>ndny) morning about • ten o'clock in shunting some pas- j senger cars attached to the tram j that had left Auckland at 7.17 a.m. | a railway porter, named Harold | Irwin Tonilinson, was killed. The deceased jumped in between the carriages put the Westing- ! house brake into action and was caught in the gear, the lower part of his body being badly crushed. Death ensued m the course of a*few ' minutes. lu the absence of Con- j stable Horan at the Auckland ■ Supreme Court the Pukekohe police : were communicated with and Con- ! stable Thornell arrived fn the after-1 noon to make arrangements for the j inquest, which opened this morning i before Mr C. Roadley (District j Coroner). The deceased, who was J 35 years of age, had been stationed ; at Mercer for the past nine months, having been transferred there from Auckland, At the inquest Inspector Trueman was present on behalf of the Railway Department and Sergeant Cowan represented the Police. Evidence of identification of the body was given by the deceased's brother, Mr F. C. Tomlinson, of Heme Bay. Porters J. S. Thomas and H. S. Webb then described the accident and Dr Wake (Pukekohe) gave particulars as to the injuries received. The inquest was proceeding as we went to press.
