PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held oil Wednesday evening when there were present the Mayor (Mr H. G. B. Mason), Crs A. B. Barter, J. Patterson, G. H. Armstrong, D. Hamilton, A. P. Daysh, F. J. Moitow, R. Bilkey, J. T. Stembridge, with the Town Clerk, Mr J. F. Deane. A COMPLAINT A complaint by Mr A. W. Lakeman as to the state of the path fronting his property in Harris street, was referred to the Works Committee to inspect and report. THE WATERWORKS Mr D. W. McArthur, consulting engineer, reported that he had inspected the new resevoir and found the work well done. He recommended that the construction of the partition in the old reservoir on the top of the hill should be proceeded with as soon as the new reservoir was ready to receive the water. The report was adopted. THE DOMAIN Mr McArthur further reported that he had taken levels all round and over the Recreation ground and would submit his report as to drainage of the ground in due course. Cr Patterson inquired whether any arrangement had been made as to the cost for taking levels on the Recreation Ground. The Mayor having replied in the negative, Cr Patterson said experiences in the past had not been too good and they ought to know how they stood. The Mayor assurred Cr Patterson there was no need to worry about the matter as the Council were not obliged to pay whatever were charged. Cr Patterson reported that the Domain had been cleared and that the Committee recommended that a portion comprising about four acres should be let for cultivation. On the motion of the Mayor the Works Committee were empowered to make arrangements for leasing the ground referred to for a period not exceeding three years. SALVATION ARMY YISITOB Capt. Elford, the local officer of the Salvation Army, wrote stating that Colonel Mclnnes, Chief Secretary of the Army's work in the Dominion, proposed to visit Pukekohe on Wednesday, the 23rd May, and asking that a civic reception should be given him either at the railway station or at the Army hall in the evening, when he would lecture on "The Salvation Army and the War." Cr Barter regarded the request as a reasonable one and felt sure all recognised the good work that was being done by the Balvation Army in connection with the war. He thought the Council should attend the lecture at the hall. Cr Stembridge fully endorsed all that Cr Barter had said. Cr Hamilton thought that they, as a Council, should keep clear of any sectarian support but it should be understood that the Council recognised the good work done irrespective of the denomination. The Mayor agreed that one _ religious body should not be recognised more than another but he thought the Council should show their appreciation of the war work done.^ Cr Barter wished it to be distinctly understood that he recognised the good done by all religious bodies. It was unanimously agreed to accede to the request, the Mayor and as many Councillors as possible to attend the lecture. NIGHT SOIL REMOVAL Cr Barter (Chairman of the Sanitary Committee) reported that land for night soil had been secured off Cape Road and collections, which had already started, would be carried out on Thursday and Friday nights. The District Health Officer (Dr Hughe") wrote that he had inspected and approved of the site of the night soil depot. He pointed out that although the lower part of the ground was suitable for the purpose the upper part had a sufficient area to be of use for some considerable period. The areas would allow of the night soil being ploughed in, the furrows being transverse and parallel to the course of the road. He was, however, doubtful whether the difficulty of access to the lower part could be solved and the intervening area was too steep to be of any use A petition, signed by 47 residents of different parts of the borough, was read protesting against the site selected for the depot and claiming that the nature of the soil there was unfitted for the use intended to be made of it. It was stated in the petition that the signatories learned with astonishment of the Council s action and they claimed that the residents of the locality should haVB been first consulted. Further, they pointed out that there would be some 25 children who would he subject to the effluvia whilst going to and returning from school and they notified their intention of not allowing the matter to rest until other and more suitable arrangements were made. The petition was referrtl to the Sanitary Committee. ROAD WORKS The Works Committee recommended that scoria should be raked and new scoria laid in Bereuford street, that the footpath on the western side of Hall street should be tarred from the Post Office corner to the County Council offices; that Harrington avenue should be kerbed and channelled so as to carry off storm water from West street;and that a new culvert should be put in Robson'a road The Committee recognised that Hooey's road required to bo graded and formed but as the winter was a bad time for earth work the consideration of that I road would have to stand over until ; the spring. . In regard to a resolution passed at the last meeting the Committee presented a recommendation allocating the supervision of the different roads in the Borough to various Councillors. The report was adopted. LOANS ETC. The Finance and Library Committee reported that in regard to the renewal of the loans falling due next November they were in communication with the larger of the dfl-

benture holders but so far were not in a position to report further on the matter. The Committee further reported that advertisements have been inserted in the "Times" asking the public to furnish particulars of men who have left Pukekohe with the Expeditionary forces and as soon as the necessary information is obtained the matter of the Roll of Honour would be proceeded with immediately. The report was adopted.
