PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD.

The adjourned monthly meeting of tlio Papakura T<j\vn Hoard was held on Tuesday last, when there were present Messrs R. M. Gillespie (chairman), H. Linstrom, P. Holt, W. Richardson, T. IT. Markwick, withtlie clerk 'Mr H, W. Oeissler). AN OBSTRUCTED DRAIN", Mr A.. Richardson wrote complaining that the drain which ran along his boundary and Messrs Smith's and Markwick's properties, next the Railway line, was blocked with rushes beyond his boundary. The drain, he said, carried a large amount of road drainage and as the result of heavy floods, his land was flooded.—lt was decided that the matter sliould receive attention. board's depot. Mr Holt submitted a plan of storehouse and conveniences adjoining the Board's office, Great South Road, and after considering the same it was resolved that Mr Holt should obtain tenders for the work. The cost, it was estimated, would be about £ 10 PUBLIC LIGHTING. The chairman expressed the opinion that the lighting throughout the township was very unsatisfactory and he suggested that two lamps should be erected, one near the Board's office and another at the corner of Park and Settlement Roads.—lt was resolved that the two lamps referred should be erected. Mr Linstrom enquired what arrangement was entered into with the Railway Department with regard to the lighting of the lamps near the railway crossing. The clerk explained that at one time oil was supplied alternately by the Board and the Department but there had been some neglect on the part of the Railway Department and the lamps had not been sufficiently lighted. The chnirman remarked that the light was of very little public benefit. Ho also expressed the opinion that the lighting on the path beside the line was very inadequate and frequently milk cans were left over night and in the absence of sufficient light were a source of danger. Messrs Linstrom and Richardson both agreed that better lighting facilities should be provided between the station and the crossing. On the motion of Mr Holt, seconded by Mr Markwick, it was resolved to write the Railway Department drawing attention to the inadequate lighting and especially to the need for the erection of a lamp between the station and the crossing. FOOTPATHS. The chairman reported as the result of his inspection of the footpaths that more attention should be given to them and he suggested that an extra man should be engaged to assist the surfaceman in the work, there being too much water on the paths. Mr Linstrom agreed that the state of the footpaths called for attention. Mr Richardson also recognised that the footpaths were a source of much inconvenience to pedestrians. It was decided that an extra surfaceman should be temporarily engaged. THE CEMETERY. The chairman reported that he had been approached by the Roman Catholic authorities for the Board to take over the control of the Cemetery and they were prepared before handing the Cemetery over to have it put into proper order, Complaint, he added, had been made by. the Ratepayers' Association as to the unsatisfactory state of the Cemetery. Mr Markwick mentioned that the overgrown blackberries could only be got rid of by ploughing while Mr Holt suggested that a portion of the land might be let and could probably be used for the growing of potatoes. It was ultimately agreed for the Board to meet at the Cemetery at an early date to decide the best course to adopt. INSURANCE. It was resolved to increase the amount of the insurance on the Board's property, including library books. SALEYARDS. The chairman reported that Messrs H. Linstrom, Richardson and he had interviewed the representatives of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company in Auckland and they had arranged to meet and inspect approaches to the saleyard at an early date. MGIIT-SOIL SERVICE. In reply to Mr Linstrom as to what was the position with regard to the proposed night soil service the chairman stated that a meeting with the District Medical Officer of Health and the Chairman of the Franklin County Council had not yet been arranged.
