ALFRISTON
PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL In spite of showery weather a large attendance was secured at the carnival held jn the Alfriston Public Hall and in the adjoining grounds, kindly lent by Mr J. T. Bodle, on Saturday, the sth inst., under the auspices' of the Alfriston and Brookby Patriotic League, and with generous support from the settlers all around the district the gathering proved a distinct success in every way. The hall was gaily decorated with flags and brisk business was done at the various stalls, over which ladies presided as follows: Lollie stall, Mrs E. Coppins, assisted by Misses Cissi Fitzpatrick, Kathlen Kemp, Sutton; Bran tub, Mrs W. Moody and Miss Jessie Mclnnes; Produce stall, Mrs T. Aickin and Mrs Sutton; Flower stall, Mrs T. Bodle and Miss Hills; Red Cross stall, Mrs Moore and Miss R. Plant.
The judging of the cookery competition, vegetable classes and other competitions was in the capable hands of Mr Alec Muir, whose awards gave the utmost satisfaction. Mrs H. Moody, chairwoman of the Ladies' Red Cross League, Misses Plant, Emoling, Sutton, Aickin, Fitzpatrick, Kemp, Revell, Allen, Knight, Moore (3), were mainly responsible for the arrangements and were aided by Messrs D. A. Reid, E. Coppins, Mclnnes Bros., Muir Bros, G. A. Smith, E, Hanch and I. Moore. Mr W, Lowther assisted very materialy in kindly lending his phone and in other ways. Mrs H. Chandler won the silver tea set donated by Laidlaw Leeds. The ladies of the Red Cross Leaguo gratutously donated all the provisions for the refreshment department, Mrs J. H. Hansch doing yeomen's service in charge of the tea rooms.
The "outside" attractions included athletic events, children's races, for which ample prizes were given by friends, going with a great swing. Other races were won as follows: Married women's race : Mrs Warlis.
Young men's race: B. Wertherby Young ladies' race: Miss Revell, Mr E. Hanch won the greasy pig race and gave the animal back to the fund.
Mr Chas. Fitzpatrick presented a sheep for a weight-guessing competition and Mr H. Moody was the winner, guessing the actual weight (113lbs). Messrs Gr. Mclnnes, Duncan McInnes and J. Sutton had charge of the sports and worked most assiduously, The first-named also ably superintended an "Aunt Bally," in which an effigy of Kaiser Bill was the target for punishment. Another popular form of pastime was the shooting gallery in charge of Messrs J. Muir, H. Chandler, and W. Moody. An auction sale, Mr H. Moody officiating as auctioneer, was held in the afternoon and realised £22, " the yarding" being made up of gifts by the following [donors, viz : Mrs W. Wedding (pig and 3 fowls); Master E. Chandler (goat) ; Master J. Moore (pig); Master Barber (2 pups); Messrs J. H. Hamel (heifer); R. J. Dunn (calf), E. D. McLennan (potatoes and 4 ducks); H. Muir (pig and 2 ducks); C. Middleton (2 ducks and brace of phesants); W. Peterson (vegetables and 2 roosters); W. Short (rooster); W. Giles (rooster); D. A. Reid (2 roosters). The stalls were cleared out of the hall and the floor was made ready for dancing by eight o'clock. At intervals betweeu the dancing Messrs C. Fitzpatrick and H. Moody acted as auctioneers and disposed of sundry articles left over. Mr H. Moody, as chairman of the Patriotic League, tendered on behalf of his committee, heartfelt thanks to one and all who had assisted to make the function the success it had proved. He announced that the results had exceeded their expectation, but no sacrifice they made could compare to the sacrifices that were being made by those whom the fund was intended to benefit.
COOKERY COMPETITIONS The following was the prize list of the cooking competitions, the prizes for which were donated by the young men of the district, viz : Plain scones: Miss Alice Thompson, Manurewa, 1; Mrs H. Moody, 2 Fancy scones: Mrs H. Chandler 1, Mrs H. Kimpton 2 Kisses : Miss K. Kemp 1, Mrs H. Kimpton 2 Jam sandwich: Mrs Aickin 1, Miss K. Kemp 2 Jam Roll: Miss S. Embling 1, Miss K Kemp 2 Ginger bread : Miss M. Revel and Mrs A. Collie tie for first Maderia cake: Mrs Wedding 1, Mrs H. Chandler 2
Sultana cake: Miss C. Muir 1, Mrs H. Chandler 2
Short bread : Miss C. Muir 1, Miss Miss J. Knight 2 Pastry : Mrs Wedding 1, Miss C. Muir 2
Home-made Bread : Mrs F. Kimpton 1, Mrs Sutton and Miss Muir tie for second
Fruit cake : Miss Mclnnes 1, Miss C. Muir 2
The points prize given by Mrs A Collie was won by Miss C. Muir. INDUSTRIAL WORK
Tho following were the results of the industrial competitions, viz: Best article made from kerosene tin won by Mr Aickin (coal scuttle) Best article made from sugar bag won by Miss R. Plant (shoe tidy) Best rag dob, Miss Gladys Arnold Best collection of vegetables, Mrs James Muir, senr.
