MERCER.
Train curtailments and the bad condition of the Great South Road between Mercer and Rangiriri are responsible for increased traffic on the Waikato River, and the Shipping Company's boats are being kept exceedingly busy.
The work of clearing the Maramai m;i Creek i- progressing. lid the cutting down of willows and other trees facilitates navigation and will encourage greater use of that creek. The men engaged by the Waikato Diver Board have been working there for some time, and .about five miles have been chared. if it were possible to obtain a further contribution of CI 00 from the Government it would enable the Board to complete the work satisfactorily. The River Board are doing their utmost to keep the various creeks in a navigable state, but are handicapped owing to lack of funds.
An officer of the Agriculture Department is to attend at Mercer on Monday next to inoculate calves against b'ackleg.
