♦ DEITH OF A BECLUSE. Whitford has numbered amongst its residents a veteran, named Frederick Herbert Fitzwilliams, who, ot au iccentiio nature, has for the past 3o years lived in a small whare on the liills. For a vi ry long time no one had seen hi in more than once a week when ho went to Whitford fur his pro-vi-ions and ho allowed none to j approach his habitation. Last I week his neighbours noticed that he seemed to be in a very helpless I state and the Otahuhu police were ■ communicated with. .Sergeant HarI vt-j ami Mouutod Constable Wade | accordingly on Wednesday last proi ceeded to Whitford and on arriving j there found the old man in a condi--1 tion that necessitated his removal to j the Auckland Hospital, but before | that could be accomplished In had i passed away. The body was remove 1 to Howick , wiere an iiupa-.-t was hold by the j District Coroner (Mr H 0. Cutten; ;on Thursday. After hearing the | evidence of l)r McDonald of Otahuhu and other witnesses, a verdict was rtturned that death was the Jesuit of senile decay.
