A fire occurred at Wiri on Wednesday last, wlit.-ivby a motor parage, bel.uiuinu' to Mr. ('abseils, together with a scvon-seater car and much other i gear, was totally destroyed. Mr. Casx'lls had lie- n out for a run and on returning put the ear into the garage. Shortly afterwards he noticed smoke 3 —»iillil- fr in the l>iulding, but in the ml'-.'lhv of any tiro apparatus it was n..( po-.jlil.' t" d" anything. It is tii«• 111-:111 th.it the cause of the outbreak was the overheating of the car. Mr. Cassells is a considerable loser through the outbreak.
MANUREWA.
(See also Page 4.) MANUREWA TOWN BOARD
The monthlv meeting of the Manu-r.-wa Town Board was held on Thursday last, when there were present. Messrs F .T Corin (chairman). C. H. i.upton. C. and G. Coxhead E. Peglar r.nd F W. Wood, with the clerk /Mr. T W. Bell). New Member. Mr Pclar expressed pleasure that Mr Wood, as an old resident, had been elected on the Board, and said he was dad to see him present for the first time. . The chairman welcomed Mr. >\oocl as a new member, and hoped he would use his best endeavour to support the dignity and order of the meetMr. Wood returned thanks for the welcome accorded him.
Russell Road
Mr. Lupton drew attention, to the unsatisfactorv state of Russell Road, near the bridcre, which in some places was impassable. Mr. C. Coxhead also regarded the road as demanding immediate attention. .. T It was decided to empower Mr. Lupton to have the necessary work done at once.
Hill Road. Tt was decided to call for tenders for work to Hill Road, the same, to be opened at noon on the day of the next meeting, of the Board.
Railway Reserve
Mr Peglar brought before the meeting the desirability of the Board aconiring the railway reserve as a public recreation ground or beauty spot, and suggested that the Railway Department should bo asked if they would hand over the same Mr. Lupton pointed out that the township possessed no reserve like at Papakura and other places He further stated that he believed the property had been given to the Railwav Department, on certain conditions and it might be prudent to point it out when making the application. On the motion of Mr. Peglar it was agreed to write to the Railway Department as suggested. Bridge over Weymouth Road.
The chairman having reported that nothin" had been done by the district engineer (Mr. McTntosh) in respect of the Board's application for a bridge over Wevmouth Road, it was resolved that a deputation should wait on him on the subject.
Children's Home Rating,
The secretarv (Mr. Thos. E Whrf ton) of the Manurewa Children a Home wrote stating that his committee expected a refund in respect of rates and awaited the decision of their legal adviser on the subject of ratin< in respect of their property. The letter was " received. Auckland Railway Station.
The chairman of the Ellerslie Town Board wrote relative to the proposed alterations to the Auckland Railway Station, and asked the co-operation •of the Board in suggesting to the Railway Department that workers trains should start from the Breakwater Road, instead of from the proposed new site at the old Mechanics Road It was also suggested that if the Board were in favour of the alteration that a meeting of local bodies should be conveyed to discuss the rme s tions raised. . It. was resolved that the Board should co-operate with the Ellerslie Town Board on the lines suggested.
Wednesday Half Holiday. The secretarv of the Department of Labour wrote" that Manurewa was gazetted as a town district from Ist April 1916, and that Wednesday had bin gazetted the half holiday for the P The chairman remarked that Wednesday, and not Thursday, was the closing day."
Myers Road. The clerk to the Papakura Road Board wrote asking that Myers Gate McHaffev's"* Road be placed under the control of the Road Board the cost of maintenance and repair being equally shared between the respective Boards. . „ ~ _.. On the motion of the chairman it was aereed to allow the Papakura Road Board to take over the control of the road, provided their legal position was in accordance with the law. A Dangerous Approach.
As a result of the recent accident which occurred at the entrance to the new railway station Mr. Peglar asked that the attention of the Railway Department should be drawn to the dangerous state of the approach, and that the gateway should be shifted so as to provide* a better entrance to the new station. , Mr Wood incidentally mentioned that a slight accident happened one evening when a resident "went over " at the spot. On the motion of Mr. Peglar it was decided to approach the Railway Department drawine their attention to the accident, and the need for an improved approach.
Footpaths
The chairman reported that the footpaths on Station Road were far from satisfactory and suggested that totara planks be'placed on the southern side of Station Road.-This was agreed to. Air. Lupton asked that the footpath from Massey Road to the Great South Road should be formed and planked and the grass removed in conformity with the other side of the road.-lt wa= resolved that this work be done.
Hill Road
The chairman having mentioned that the drain near Hawthorn s boundarv on Hill Road was unsatisfactory and that a cesspit was necessarv to carrv away the water, it was resolved that' a cesspit be formed to connect with the existing drain and that field tiles be placed in the open dram. Mr. Peglar questioned where the monev was to come from, but the chairman replied that the work to question was necessary work and that about £3O had been allocated for footP *Mr S Wood considered that the roads needed, in his opinion, more attention than the footpaths.-The chairman replied that he could hardly agree with the speaker.
High Level Bridge. The agreement was signed between Mes*r* Phillips and Gilbert for the granting of land to the Board from Ru<=ell Road to the new high level bridge whereby the Board receives, C3OO for the formation of such road. Old Railway Track.
Mr C. Coxhead. as a deputation from the Road Board, asked the cooperation of the Town Board with a view of approaching the Railway Department and asking them to hand over the old railway line from the Great South Road to the new bridge on Station Road for the purposes of a stock route. It was agreed to co-operate with the Road Board as requested. Future Meetings. It was resolved that future meetings of the Board should be held on (lie fourth Monday in each month and that the next meeting should be on May 2?. Accounts. Accounts amounting to £72 3s were passed for payment.
