OCCULT GEMS.

Despite the advances of civilisation and the high standard of twen-tieth-century education, it is surprising what a number of people still place their faith in the influences of certain stones, dates, and mascots, and hold Arm to old superstitions whose origin is lost in bygone ages. In these days nearly everyone is in possession of "lucky" charm of some kind, and place implicit confidence in the good effects produced by wearing their birthday stone or one of the many mascots supposed to guard against ill-fortune of all kinds.
