Pukekohe's Half-Holiday.
[TO THE EDITOR. J Sir, —In reply to "Enquirer," whose letter appeared in a recent issue of the " Times," I desire to say that the attitude of the employees engaged in shops the proprietors of which have decided to continue to close their places of business on Saturday afternoons, is not so '• unreasonable " as he asserts.
" Enquirer " is wide of the mark in his estimate of the number of employees of " all the other shops " but whatever the number I desire to state that the employees have united to secure for all the same benefits to be thrived from a continuance of Saturday closing ; had the mere favoured employees maintained an attitude of indifference, that attitude would have be,en " unreasonable." The employees were compelled to state their case, in their own interests, in view of the fact that an endeavour was being made to educate the voters in favour of a change. With all shops open and closed during the same hours, all will have an equal opportunity and we fail to see that any hardship can thus be imposed upon the " small trader " a 9 " Enquirer " would have us infer.- - I am, etc ,
J. PILKINGTON, Chairman of Employees' Committee.
