Nominations for the office of Mayor and for membership of the Borough Council (eight seats) will close on Wednesday, the 18th inst., at noon with the Returning Officer (Mr C. K. Kent-Johnston) and polling will take place on the following Wednesday. The Supplementary 801 l of Electors will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday of next week. Under the auspices of the Women's Christian Temperance Union a well attended gathering took place at the Methodist Church on Tuesday last when the Rev. H. Mason presided. Mrs Harrison Lee-Cowie, of Invercargill, gave a forceful address on the Temperance question, especially with regard to the need for legislation to the Liquor traffic and the curtailment of the facilities for soldiers obtaining intoxicating drink. The chances of the opposing factions at the pending mayoral and municipal elections are attracting a good deal of attention locally and the Ratepayers' Association are energetically striving to secure the success of their nominees, their claim being that the Council wants "shaking up " so that a constructive policy of works should be carried out in all parts of the borough instead of a past tendency to unduly localise operations. With regard to the current complaints as to the unsatisfactory state of the local telephonic service Mr J. Todd has received a communication from the member for the district, Sir F. W. Lang, to the effect that he had wired the Postmaster-General on the subject. The local postmaster (Mr H. L. Slyfield) informed our representative yesterday that the cause of the inconvenience and trouble was a defect in a cable. There were about 40 members present at the annual meeting of the Football Club held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Mr C. Baker. The patrons of the Club, the Kt. Hon. W. F. Massey M P. and Sir Fredk." Lang M.P., were re-elected, while Mr J. Williams was re-elected president The secretary appointed was Mr* A. Willstead. Mr G Adcock, who was re-elected treasurer, in presenting the statement of accounts for the year reported a balance in hand of £25 which was regarded as satisfactory. It was decided to enter three teams for the League Competition and Mr C. Baker was re-elected delegate to represent the Club at the League'e meetings. Mr E. Frost, who was re-elected the Club's captain, was appointed delegate to the Junior Advisory Board. It was mentioned that no less than one hundred members of the Club have gone to the Front, the late secretary, Mr W. Frost, being amongst those who left by the last contingent. One noticeable feature of the meeting was the true sportsmanlike spirit which prevailed throughout and judging from prospects Otahuhu is likely to put up a good team for the coming season. At the Bowling Club's match played last Saturday between the President v. Vice-President's teams the results were as follows (the President's teams being mentioned first) : —F. Baildon, W. Wallace, Knight, R. Todd, 22 v. Bryett, Tucker, Everitt, Lawrence, 23 ; J. George. Pooley, Daisley, Patterson, 23 v. J. Harper, Parkin, Burcher, Crosher, 18 ; May, Hughes, Ryrie, M. Walker 21 v. Clark, Bennett, Bryant, Oswald, 19 ; Simpson, Kemplay, Henderson, McCallum 23 v. Nicholls, Harvey, Fenton, Gladding 31. Totals : President. 187 ; vice-presidents. 167. A correspondent writes: " With the Supplementary Electoral 801 l due to close on Wednesday next no little complaint is being made as to the late publication of the Main Roll, which has not yet made its appearance. The work of canvassing and of adding new names to the Roll is thus impeded." A garden party, promoted by the members of the Otahuhu Croquet Club, is to be held at the residence of Mr James Mclndoe on the afternoon of Tuesday, 24th inst., in aid of the funds of the Croquet Club. The proceedings will take the form of " break " croquet, musical items and card games. Several ladies from Auckland have promised to attend and a most successful function is anticipated.
