ALFRISTON AND BROOKBY

PAPAKURA ROAD BOARD. The usual monthly meeting of the Papakura Road Board was held on Monday of last week, Mr. E. D. MacLennan presiding. The laying of two 18in. culverts for Ranfurly Road was authorised, as also a similar culvert for Ardmore Road, to replace the present bridge, which has rotted.

The matter of willows blocking the Creek and causing the water to overflow was discussed, and it was resolved that a deputation should wait on the Manukau County Council to suggest the advisability of taking joint action to enforce the clearance of obstructions.

A letter was read from the Acting Prime Minister in regard to the observance of Anzac Day, fixed for Monday, April 23rd, and it was arranged to hold a public meeting at 8 p.m. on that day, the speakers to bo Mr. E. D. McLennan, Rev. Armstrong, Mr. F. M. Allen, and others. Comments were made as to the state of the arterial roads in the district, blackberry and gorse in some cases spreading right across the roads. A general meeting of members and friends of the Alfriston and Brookby Patriotic League was held in the Alfriston Hall, on Friday night, March 23, to consider ways and means of raising funds to help the noble cause of Red Cross work. It wa3 decided to hold a sports meeting and carnival on May sth, 1917. Several committees were appointed, Mr. G. Mclnnes agreeing to take charge of the sports. The lady members of the Alfriston and Brookby Red Cross League have again resumed operations after a brief respite during the harvest and haymaking period, and are having very successful fortnightly gatherings. Work is being done by the ladies for the Victoria League, and the Second Stationary Hospital, besides making hussifs for the Auckland Patriotic League. 'A very successful meeting took place on Wednesday, March 28, at the residence of Mrs. Henry Muir, at which Mrs. H. Moody asked the ladies for their hearty co-operation towards the success of the sports carnival, to be held at Alfriston on May 5. The ladies unanimously decided to provide and attend to all refreshments required. —#-
