PUKEKOHE'S HALF-HOLIDAY.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—ln yonv last issue a report appears of a resolution passed by tno shop employees of Pukekohe in strenuously oppose any alteration in the Saturday half-holiday as now observed in Pukekohe, and immediately below the same was a reference to tn° announcement of six traders of the town that no matter what the wish of the electors was they would refuse to close on Wednesdays, and would still shut their establishments on Saturdays. In what way, then, I ajk. are the' employees concerned in the matter? Apart from the storekeepers in question it is safe to assort that not more than half-a-dozen employees are to be found in all the other shops combined. We have the ultimatum that these six traders will close on Saturdays, so surely their employees need not worry themselves about what, day other business people or private residents think would best suit them for the half-holiday. If a change is made it will not affect them; consequently their attitude is unreasonable. I would, however, ask these same employees if it came to pass that they were in a position of being able to start in business for themselves whether they would not, as small shopkeepers, ' clamour for facilities for Saturday shopping to be afforded so that as small traders they might make a living.—Yours, etc., " ENQUIRER."
