Reports of several matters of local and di trict interest are on account of pressure on our space unavoidably held over until our issue of Tuesday next.
Particulars of train arrangements for the Easter holidays are advertisud in this issue.
Air \V. Coster, Pukekohe's courteous postmaster, is now back at duty again, having recovered from his recent serious illness.
Mr Eber Barriball, of Waiuku, is at present an inmate of the Auckland Hospital, in which institution he last Monday underwent an operation for appendicitis. A choice display of apples and other fruit is observable at Mr A. Sears' establishment in Pukekohe—opposite Dell's Corner. Cordials and lollies are also sold there.
Corporal W. V. Coady, a brother of Mr J. J. Coady, of Pukekohe, has been wounded in action and is now in hospital in England. Corporal Coudy was serving with the Australian Forces.
Tho dat-; of the visit to Sandhiils and Kariotahi of a Government officer to inoculate calves against blackleg has been altered to Tuesday, April 10th. A full list of places and dates for the purpose appears in our advt. columns.
The mayoral election campaign in Pukekoho will be opened on Monday evening next when M James Costello will address th electors in the Premier Hall. M Costello invites the electors to hea his views and makes a special reques for lady voters to attend.
The list of recent enlistments made at tho Pukekuhe Defonce Office c mtains the names of Messrs S. H. Forbes (Mauku), Jas. Thompson (Pukekawa) and Gabriel Smith (Aka Aka). Tho tirst-named is a returned soldier and previously saw service with tho 6th Reinforcements.
The New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Bacon and Meat Packing Company, Limited, will next week only be buying pigs at Onewhero on Monthly, and at Tuakau on Tuesday. Other dates for next week as previously announced have been cancelled uwuig to the Works closing down for Easter.
A wide range of new drags materials for the winter season has just been opened up at Mr W. Roulston's drapery establishment in Pukekohe and ladies are invited to call and make an inspection of the stock.
The Rev. Wm Johnston, of Ellerslie, will preach at both ser vices in St James Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Mr Johnston has been appointed by the Auckland Presbytery to visit Pukekohe Charge and read the rinding of the recent Presbyterial Visitation.
Formal notice of the forthcoming election of a member to represent the combined Counties of Franklin and Manukau on the Auckland Harbour Board appears in our advertising columns. Mr H. B. Mackenzie, the sitting member, has already announced bis intention of offering himself for re-election.
Intending entrants for the Children's Competitions to be held in aid of the Belgian Children's Fund in the Premier Hall, Pukekohe, on Easter Tuesday (April 10th) are requested to note that entries will close on Thursday of next week, April sth. Particulars of the various classes will be found in our advt, columns.
The first outward and visible sign af the approaching installation of electric light in Pukekohe is the arrival of an initial consignment of poles to be used fur the street illumination. These have in the meantime been stacked in the railwayyard.
Are the electors of Pukekohe satisfied with local conditions and with the present progress of works ? Mr James Costello, who is a candidate for the Mayoral office, will put forward his views and will cite interesting facts and figures in the Premier Hall on Monday next at 8 p.m. All Electors are invited to attend.—Advt.
Mr E. Hallott, of Mercer, the owner of the Waipa Hotel, Ngaruawahia, recently destroyed by fire, has decided to erect an up-to-date and commodious brick building on the site of the demolished structure at a cost of upwards of £7OOO It is Mr Hallett's intention to provide one of the most modern and attractive hotel buildings to be found in the Waikato.
Nominations for the office of Mayor of Pukekohe and for membership of the Borough Council will close at noon on April 16th and Wednesday, April 11th will be last day for claims to be made for the insertion of names in the Supplementary 801 lof Electors. The elections, together with the poll to decide the date of the weekly halfholiday, will take place on Wednesday, April 25th.
