HALF-HOLIDAY POLL.
A largely attended meeting of employees was held in the Borough Council Chambers, Fukekohe, last Monday evening to consider the question of the weekly half-holiday. Mr J. Pilkington who was voted to the chair explained the purpose of the meeting which wad to clearly ascertain what was the desire of the employees regarding the day to be selected for the half holiday; he stated that for a number of years the majority of storekeepers had favoured Saturday afternoon closing and it had become an established fact If the day was changed much hardship would be imposed upon a number of employees whose only opportunity of visiting their homes was during the week end and who would be deprived of that privilege if Wednesday was substituted. In asking for an expression of opinion as to whether Saturday should be retained the chairman requested that only bona tide employees should vote. Upon a show of hands being taken a unanimous vote was recorded in favour of Saturday. A committee was appointed to watch the interests of the employees consisting of Messrs J. Pilkington (chairman), F. Jackson, L. Brown, H. Shotbolt and Geo. E. Morrison (secretary).
In connection with the coming poll on the half-holiday question Messrs H. Dell, W. T. Jones, Owen McLean, F. Perkins & (Jo. f W. Roulston, and Shotbolt & Co. announce by advertisement in this issua that having lodged a petition in accordance with the Shop and Offices Act they have been granted permission to close their respective establishments on Saturday afternoons even if Wednesday is, by the result of the poll, fixed as the day of the half-holiday.
