WHANGARATA.

patriotic league. The Whangarata Patriotic League forwarded a parcel, containing 24 pairs sox, 15 shirts, 10 suits pyjamas, and 36 handkerchiefs, to Chaplain McDonald on Thursday, 15th inst. All our workers have made a special effort to hare as large a parcel as possible and the result is very gratifying for such a small community. Our hope is that the parcel will reach Chaplain Mac Donald safely and that the garments will give comfort to some of our sick or wounded boys. The following were the workers : —Sox : Mesdames Coad 3 pairs, Campbell 4, Ciuickehank 4, Ewing 6, D. Fulton 1, Glasgow 2, Misses Hyde 2 and A. Hunter 1. Shirts : Mesdame3 Brewster 2, Donovan 5, Eraser 2, J. Fulton 3, Rapson 3. Pyjamas: Mesdames Fraser 2, T. Smeed 4, W Smeed 2, Marx 2. Handkerchiefs : Mrs Rapson. On Thursday evening a surprise party was held at Mr Fulton's residence. Music and cards were the order of the evening and after supper Mr Fulton was called upon to open " that " bottle of peas and to count how many there were. The number contained in it was 635 and Mr E. McGahan, whose guess was 635, won the calf. It was the small hours of the morning, when with three cheers for Mr and Mrs Fulton the visitors departed. The League benefits to the extent of £4 14s by Mr Fulton's gift.
