Mr Len. Brown, captain of the Pukekohe Fire Brigade, presented himself at the Recruiting Office in Auckland last week but was only passed for " home service." Messrs J. T. Stembridge and Co. advertise in this issue particulars of a special entry for the usual weekly sale at their Auction Mart, Pukekohe, on Friday next. Mr D. Bockett, town clerk, of Te Awamutu, and brother of Mr H. Bockett, of Pukekohe, has enlisted The last meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council declined to accept his resignation, but granted leave of absence on half pay and wished him a safe return. Mr C. Bowden, clerk of the Waipa bounty Council, was appointed acting-town clerk. The difficulties encountered sometimes by backblocks settlers in their efforts' to attend County Council meetings wcri aptly illustrated in at least one instance at the last meeting of the Raglan County Council, when a Councillor stated that it had cost him no less than £3 5s to get to the meeting. He was anxious to have the day of the meeting altered—and who wouldn't at £3 5s a time ? The success he had achieved at the Pukekohe Show on the 24th ult, as being adjudged the best Maori rider competing at the Show led a young Waiuku native, named Paul Noble, to celebrate the occasion by quaffing the contents of " the flowing bowl " despite the fact that he was the subject of a Prohibition Order. Constable Taylor cautioned Paul on the show-ground as to his attendance in the booth and in the evening the Constable found him in the Tuakau Hotel with the result that he made his appearance at the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court last Thursday on a charge of entering licensed premises during the currency of his prohibition order. The excuse Paul made to the Magistrate (Mr F. V. Frazer S.M.) was that it was his father who had taken out the order and he thought it was only to prevent him entering the Waiuku Hotel. He was warned by the Magistrate not to repeat the offence and was fined £1 and 7s costs.
