No. 5 (Contributed.') To the Shopkeeper. Always greet your customers a stony stare—what the devil-do-ycu-want sort of air. It pleases them and it preserves a desirable air of independence. Always try to push off some article your customer doesn't want. Of c mrse your judgment is superior to his. Be sure and say that any increase in price "is owing to the war " and if you are out of any line that it is unprocurable Of course your customers never go to Auckland and there fore they will not know any different. If any farmer customer comes in be sure and tell him that you run your store as a philanthropic institution and that you really do not know what the farmers would do without the business people. He will be impressed with your superior knowledge. Always encourage your assistants (if you have any) to giggle and pass uncomplimentary remarks about your customers as they are leaving the store. Customers lika it and it adds to the tone of the store. Avail yourself of every opportunity of running down your business opponents. Tour customers know of course thit you only da so out of sheer overplus of generosity. It is gojd business equitette, too. Never be in a hurry to attend to your customers. Tou are in business for pleasure and it is quite unreasonable to expect you to bustle unduly. Be sure and tell your customers that you are letting them have the goods at a less price than to any other customers. Nobody knows anybody else and they never talk about store prices.
