PAPATOETOE

[The Papatoetoe Agent for the "Pukekohe Times" is Mr W. J. Dilworth from whom copies of the paper may be obtained.] PAPATOETOE EOAD BOARD The usual mouthly meeting of the Papatoetoe Koad Board was held on Monday, March oth, the members present being Messrs J. Bryant, J. Wyllie, W. May and 8. Woolfield. In the absence of the chairman (Mr G. McNiccol) Mr J. Wyllie was voted to the chair.

CORONATION ROAD. It was decided to order another 12 loads of scoria to continue the roading of Coronation road. A few more loads are yet needed to finish to the furthest residence and the Board has already spent £IOO on this road. Mr S. Woolfield objected to the Board's former resolution to turn all storm water from Coronation road into the one place in his gully and thought the Board should place a cess-pit at the head of the road, thus diverting half the water into the smaller branch of the gully. Mr Wyllie considered that the Board was fully justified in turning the water into the old natural water course.

Mr Woolfield stated his intention to fight tbe Board for any damage resulting. Mr Wyllie retorted that he was quite prepared to let Mr Woolfield do as he thought fit. Mr Bryant expressed the opinion that the matter might be reconsidered and he gave notice of motion to the next meeting the resolution carried at the last ordinary meeting, viz, To place als inch pipe at the gully to take the storm water from Aitchison's corner.

A SPECIAL MEETING. There being no other ordinary meeting before the close of the financial year, Mr Wyllie moved and it was agreed that an extraordinary meeting should be held on Monday, March 26th, to pass final accounts and to consider Mr Bryant's notice of motion re Coronation road.

ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £26 Is 4d were passed for payment.

Mr J. Ward has been reappointed dog registrar and dog owners will require to call at his residence, Station road, for their collars. The Town Board has engaged Mr Sadgrove permanently for two days each week as supervisor of road work. Mr Sadgrove has had 15 years experience with the Grey Lynn Council as foreman. It is interesting to note that several members of the musical society are endeavouring to form an orchestra. They have the use of St. George's Hall for practice each Thursday evening. At present there are only six performers and more would be very welcomed. The orchestra is sadly in need of an honorary conductor and members will be pleased to hear from anyone capable of filling the position. Indeed there seems to be a good opening for an all round music teacher, there being none other than pianoforte teachers in the district.

Our worthy huntsman, Mr Hirst, has been giving the hounds light road work during the past few weeks getting ready for the opening of the Pakuranga Hunt Club season. The hounds are looking fit and well and sportsmen are looking forward to the opening of the season, particulars of which will be reported later. A most successful Gala Day in aid of the Bed Cross Fund was held on Saturday last on the Papatoetoe bowling and erorjuet greens and also on the tennis courts. Early in the afternoon the motor cars, buggies and sulkies commenced to arrive loaded with patrons and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent the handsome sum of £34 being secured. Almost every part of the district was represented, seme even coming from Ponsonby. The bowling and croquet greens were in full swing and several matches were played on the tennis courts. Three teams of bowlers journeyed from Otahuhu and after some exciting games Otahuhu emerged victorious in each instance. Several stalls were erected for the sale of gifts and were well patronised. The stall holders were : Lollies and drinks, Mrs Hunter and Miss M. Hamilton; ice creams, Miss VV. Wyllie; fruit and vegetables, Miss S. Hodge and Miss F. Hamilton. The sale of buttonholes was carried out by a bevy of school children whilst cake weight guessing competitions were engaged in. The scores in the tennis matches were: Bradstreot's trophy, Mr Kirk 69, Mr H. Bryant 71, MissO'Loughlen 50, Miss Cutforth 46. In the bowling the following were the scoies the names of Otahuhu players being mentioned first in each case, viz.—First year players : Winters Harvey, Ken play, Baker 20 v. Farnsworth, Ernest, Swaffield, Cutforth 16. Senior Fours: Shepherd, Apps, Maddigan, Fernleigh 21 v. Jenkins, Bryett, Daisley, Watson 20, and Brown, Bailey, Whyte, Harper 23 v. Trimble, Hodge, Coles, Andrew 11.

Other matches resulted as follows: Kirk, Galloway, Kawnsley 21 v. Barton, Leonard, Knight 14 ; Timewell, Wells, Clark, Keid 20 v Wills, Tidmarsh, Bryant, Hall 23 ; Gladding and Chapman 22 v. Elliot and Gane 20.

Several Papatoetoe matters were dealt with at last Thursday's meeting of the Manukau Couuty Council and are included in our report of the Council meeting appearing in this issue.

The Anniversary Services in connection with the Methodist Sunday School were held on Sunday last and were well attended, the singing being particularly good and eclipsiog that of previous years. The children were well trained for the occasion under the baton of the able conductor, Mr Foster.
