TUAKAU.
A MAORI AND HIS SCHNAPPS.
A Wairamarama native, named Kau Tukua, found to his cost at the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court last Thursday that it is a somewhat costly experiment to try and defeat the ends of justice. The charge against him was that on March 25 th of last year he did aid and abet another native in supplying liquor, to wit a bottle of Schnapps, to a native for consumption off licensed premises. The accused having pleaded guilty, Constable Taylor explained that the other native concerned was convicted at the time, but Tukua disappeared and had repeatedly made himself scarce when he (the Constable) proceeded to his different places of abode to serve him with the summons.
The accused, on being asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say, replied: Too long ago to remember. I never been to school. (Laughter) The M agistrate : You Maoris are. pretty "fly" without going to school. (Laughter). The accused: I gave the other Maori 10s for the bottle of Schnapps to cost 2s 6d, and I never got the schnapps nor the change. (Renewed laughter). Ihe Magistrate: Well you will find that bottle of Schnapps pretty dear and it will be a lesson to you not to clear out when the Constable wants to see you. Yow will have to pay a fine of 10s and £2 17s 6d costs
Tukua caused further merriment after asking for time in which to find the money by exclaiming: "I pay it now, eh'! Igo outside and see the missus."
