MANUREWA.
MANUREWA TOWN BOARD A special meeting of the above Board was held on Tuesday, 13th February, to discuss the roading conditions for new sub-divisions. A request was received from the Jellicoe Estate Syndicate asking for easier roading conditions on the es-
tate !o be granted tht>m.—A lengthy discu-sion ensued in which ixiciition was made that the scarcity ol labour was largely responsible for the high cost of road construction.
Mr Masters, of Papatoetoe, on behalf of the Jellicoe Estate Syndicate, waited on the Bo*rd and explained that the co.-t of constructing roads was more than the first conditions granted by the old Road Board and that therefore the Syndicate Lad decided not to go on with the work unless some reduction in the specifications were granted.
The chairman with a view to expediting the sub-division of the property and thtrefore of promoting settlement in the district moved, and Mr Charles Coxhead seconded, "That this Board accede to the Jellicoe Estate Syndicate's request asking for a reduction of width of the metalling of the roadi on their Estate from 18 feet to 15 feet."—The motion was agreed to On condition that the Syndicate commence the work within one month end proceed with it without any undue delay it was also agreed to allow them the option of putting on nine inches of blue metal instead of six inchos of spawls and six inches of scoria.
Mr Master's suggested that if the cost of shingle metalling was not in excess of blue metal the Board should endeavour to promote the shingle formation on roads in their district and by way of substantiating his remarks offered to convey the Board over numerous roads in adjoining districts by motor car to inspect all classes of. formations.—The offer was accepted with thanks
As pre arranged the members of the Manurewa Town Boa'd met last Thursday afternoon at the Board's Office and were conveyed by motor car through the undermentioned districts, viz., Papatoetoe, Mount Wellington, Howick. Panmure, Otahuhu and Mange re. During the tiip advantage was taken to inspect the new road on the Dilworth Trust property. The weather being most propitious on the occasion the members of the Board spent a very pleasant two hours' motor outing and were much impressed with the roads formed of shingle and decided to make enquiries from different outside Local Bodies for information reshingle roads.
