MERCER.
There was a good attendance at the Patriotic Concert held iu the Public Hall last Friday, when Private T. J. Wright, of the 23rd Reinforcement?, late Town Clerk of Mercer, who was on hiß final leave, was farewelled. Mr H. Clifford, who made the presentation, did so in an appropriate Bpeecb, expressing the hope that the recipient would return safe. He felt Bure Private Wright would uphold the best traditions of the British flag. The presentati >n consisted of a wristlet Walthem watcb, and Private Wright expressed his sincere ihanks for the gift. During tbe evening a concert and dance was held, Mrs Bush being at the piano, the M.C.'s being Messrs F. J. Freeborn and K. Kelly. Songs were contributed by Mr A. U. Tribe, "Songs I Sing to You"; Miss Valentine, "A Song of Waiting"; Mibs Kita Kagg, "The Long, Long Trail"; and Mrs S. Seymour, "Island of Dreams." A quartet, "Sympathy," was rendered by Miss Valentine, and Messrs Gallery, Seymour and Tribe. Altogether a most enjoyable evening was helt'. Good progress is being made with the Koto Ngaro Drainage scheme, the contractors having nearly finished the work. It is confidently expected that the opening into the Whangape Lake will be accomplished during the ntxt three weeks. When this is carried out it will cause the lake to be lowered seven feet and this will materially benefit the settlers in the district.
Applications from either sex are invited tor the position of Town Clerkship of Mercer. A roadman is also required by the Town Board. For particulars see our advertising columns.
