MANUREWA.
The Manurewa Branch of the Victoria League are organising a monster outdoor Fete to raise funds to enable the Branch to start the year with a good credit balance. The function is to be held in Mr Aspden's paddock which is right in the centre of the township, on Saturday the 3rd of March, and should the weather be fine it ought to prove a great success. Already the different committees formed to carry on the management have received numerous donations and promises of gifts of produce and the support of any one feeling disposed to help either financially or with gift will be thankfully received. As this worlds purely patriotic it behoves everyone* to do their utmost in the interest of those who have so bravely sacrificed so much in our interest. Arrangements have been made for a monster produce stall, sweet stall, after tea and refreshments, flower stall and ice cream and soft drinks stall. A sports programme is being arranged, and prizes will be given for the best decorated motor car, horse vehicle, children's pet and sunshade. The hon. sec. for the Fete is Mr T. J. Corin, Mis A. Muir being hon. treas. The local schoolmaster, Mr McNaughton, is to be congratulated on the results obtained at tho recent examinations for Junior Scholarships, three of his pupils having gained Free Places, eleven Proficiency Certificates and one a Competency Certificate. The Manurewa Town Board members paid a visit to various new roads around Auckland yesterday (Thursday) in order to become better acquainted with new methods of roai construction and the advantage claimed for shingle in the formation of roads. A very successful social took place in the Manurewa Public Hall on Monday evening last. The occasion was the farewelling of Privates Claude de Carteret. Roy But'erworth, Keith Butterworth and W. Palmer, but the two last-named were unable to be present. A very excellent musical programme was supplied by the following, viz.: Miss Shepherd (song), Miss Lovell (recitation), Miss Brady (fancy dancing), Miss Freshney (song) and Miss Marks (song). After the musical items each soldier was presented with a shaving outfit by Mr T. J. Corin, who briefly outlined the good work Manurewa was doing in regard to recruiting. The Rev W. C. Wood also spoke in reference to soldiers volunteering and those called in the ballot, pointing out that it would be very unwise to make any distinction between tho two. He also explained that tho Manurewa Victoria League had taken in hand the management of send-ofi'3 to soldiers, and stated that that body would be responsible in future for seeing that every soldier leaving the district was given a suitable send-off and a gift of the same value as those presented on this occasion.
Mrs Bailey thanked all those present for the cordial support they had given tho function, especially Miss Shepherd Miss Brady and Mrs H. Walters, who so freely helped with the music. The hall was then cleared and dancing was indulged in until a late hour. % W
