TECHNICAL EDUCATION AT PUKEKOHE.

A meeting ol' the Pukekohe Technical School Advisory Committee was held on Monday, Feb. sth, with Mr Perkins in the chair, Mr J. P. Kalaugher, Supervisor of Technical Education, attending. It was decided that the following classes should be held for the 1917 session : —English, arithmetic, bookkeeping, shorthand, typewriting, dressmaking, home science, trade drawing, wood work (junior) and wood work (adults). Arrangements were made regarding the appointment of instructors for the various classes. Mr J. Bellhouse will be in attendance at the Pukekohe District High Schcol on Friday, February 23rd, and Monday, February 26tb, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., to enrol students for the various classes. The committee will endeavour to establish afternoon classes in shorthand and typewriting, in dressmaking and home science, and those who wish for afternoon classes should let Mr Bellhouse know as soon as possible so that arrangements may be made.

A special committee has been set up to raise money to purchase additional typewriters for the classes. It is proposed to hold a concert and also a picture entertainment in aid of this scheme. Any money so raised will carry £ for £ subsidy from the Education Department, and the Supervisor informed the committee that he would recommend the Education Board to give an additional X for £ up to £2C. This means that if £2O is raised locally there will be £6O available for the purchase of typewriters. All classes are free to those (a) who hold a Standard VI. certificate of proficiency, or who have qualified for a junior or senior free place provided they take a "grouped course," or (b) who are between the ages of 14 and 17 years, and who attend for at least four hours weekly. For paying students the fees have been fixed at very low rates and concessions are made to those taking two or more subjects.
