MERCER.

Although the water of the Waikato has lowered it has still the appearance of a "squally sea," and on Monday last the white foam of the breakers looked mora line midocean than the calm of the Waikato as usually se;n at Mercer. The shipping trade, however, is cot interfered with, although the business which comes through the Waikato Shipping Company is daily increasing. From thoee best aWe to judge—men of ehipping and business experience—it can be safely predicted that in the future more use will be made of this valuable waterway, which actß as a link betvcen the farmer and the commercial men, bringing the cream daily to the factory and carrying goods in return. There was a large audience present at the excellent entertainment held in support of the Belgian Fund in the Public Hall on Saturday last, over which Mr W. Olpan presided. The programme opened with a pianoforte solo by Mrs Ingram, F.S.M., fullowed by a well-rendered song by Miss Denzie. A humorous sketch, "An Old Soldier's Keminescence," by Mr Thomas Harris delighted everyone. 1 was followed by a performance of magic, after which Mrs Ingram played a pianoforte solo. Mr A. C. Tribe obliged the audience with a song "Go tu Sea," and the next item, by Mr Harris, a humorous sketch, was highly appreciated. A 'performance ot magic concluded the programme, and atter the singing of the National Anthem th 3 floor was prepared for dancing, which was krpt up until midnight. Mr F. J. Freeborn ably acted as M.C., the dance music being supplied by Mr S. Busb. A farewell concert and presentation is to take plare here next Friday in honour of Private T. Wright, who is levins for the front.
