TUAKAU

A correspondent writes: "It is rumoured that shares in the local Canal Company, whose headquarters are alongside the hotel and the billiard saloon, will be freely taken up by those most interested in the development of its waterway at the point mentioned. On Saturday last, owing to the heavy rain, there would have been no difficulty in running a launch to meet the convenience of the members of the local Town Board. Whether these members are provided for by other forms of locomotion it is unwise to conjecture, but it is felt that the suggestion of a canal in the main street may yet be a means of obviating other problems wbich from time to time baffle the Town Board members. It may yet be possible to divert the water from the thoroughfare In question, in which case the projected Canal Company would not gain much support." When Mr Edward Muir, of Onewhero, was proceeding home on Friday last in his car the front steering wheel in some unaccountable way collapsed near Mr U. Lapwood's bouse, by the river bank, at Tuakau. The car, becoming unmanageable, collided with a telegraph pole, resulting in Mr Muir being thrown out, fortunately without injury. Ultimately the car came to a standstill at a ti-tree by the side of the road. From what can be gathered the car was at the time of the accident travelling at a good rate, and it is miraculous that Mr Muir escaped so well. Mr Chas. M. Osborne, who has been practising as an accountant in the district of the past three years, has been admitted an Associate of the New Zealand Suciety of Public Accountants. Mr Osborne enjoys a good reputation as a capable businessman, and the notification referred to ehould serve to further confirm his professional reputation.
