PAPAKURA.
FAFAKUKA TOWN BOAKD. At the meeting of the Papakura Town Board, held last evening, there were present: Messrs K. M. Gillespie, chairman, H. Marwick, W. Linetrom, W. Kiohardson, T. Campbell, U. Lhyd, P. Holt, with the clerk, H. W. Geissler. BST-LAWS. Ihe by-laws as passed at a special meeting held on December 29th were duly confirmed, and were ordered to come iutu force as from March 7th next. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the local postmaster relative to the Board's communication as to the approach to the office, which, he said, would have attention. —The chairman informeJ the Board that t e engineer hsd inspected the site and would report late.
Mr Wm. Kerr wrote resigning his position as lamplighter.—lt was decided to make arrangements for the appointment of his successor.
Mr M. J. Carr wrote he had made ■ome clearance on bis property but that dram pipes had been removed and a wocden headway put in their place. The writer asked for ttese to be replaced by the Board.—The clerk was instructed to write to Mr Carr and to call on him to clear the whole of his frontage. A letter was received from Mr J. Whitaker renewing his offer 'o pay halt cost of tarring and sanding the footpath in front of his shop as accepted by the late Board and not carried out.—After discussion, on the motion of Mr Bolt, seconded by Mr Richardson, it was decided to inform Mr Whitaker that the Board would agree to do the tarring and landing at his (Sir Whitaker's) expence. Mr J. L. Mack wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the road from Ford's corner to Mr Lyons' property—The matter wss referred to the Works Committee. The Education Department wrote acknowledging the Boards' application for subsidy in respect of the Board's library, stating that the matter would have attention.
A letter was received from the acting-clerk to the Msnurewa Town Board stating that his Board had decided to deal privately with the sanitary contractor, Mr Hawkins, and that negotiations with the Panakura Board for a joint service would not be proceeded with.
FAREWELLS TO SOLDIERS. Mr C. C. Tuely, hon. secretary to the Send-off Committee, wrote asking the Board to make a grant to assist the Committee in their work.
Mr Markwick expressed the opinion that the Board would requre all money available for other necessary wck. Br Linstrom thought that a small contribution would be acceptable, and on Mr Campbell's suggesting that the sum ot 452 29 be contributed, this- was agreed to. The chairman opposed the motion, not being in tavour ot public money being contributed for that purpose. On a divisi9n being taken five voted for the proposition, the chairman and Mr Markwick dissenting.
DOMINION ROAD.
A letter was received from Mr A. P. Day, clerk to the franklin County Council, in reply to the Board's communication aa to the state of Dominion road, enclosing the engineer's report thereon, tne cost of necessary work being estimated at £SO.
The chairman stated that the Council wonlJ be prepared to carry out the work provided the Board contributed half the cost.
On the motion ot Mr Holt, seconded by Mr Campbell, it was agreed fur the Council to do the work, the Board contributing half the cost. SIKEET LIGHTING.
Mr Holt brought forward a recommendation that a lamp should be placed between Kichardson's factory and the Papakura Hotel. The chairman expressed the opinion that whatever lamp was erected it should be a good one. Mr Markwick thought that work on (he Great South road was so necessary that he would be more inclined to have a cheaper light. Both Mr Campbell and the chairman were in favour of two good acetylene lights. Mr Richardson expressing a similar opinion. After further discussion, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Campbell, it was resolved to have two acetlyene lamps on concrete posts erected, one near Richardson's factory and the other near Mr Cole's.—Messis Holt and Markwick voted against the proposition.
HUNUA ROAD
The chairman having referred to the bad state of this road it was resolved that the matter be referred to th 3 Works committee. SANITARY SERVICE. Un the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Holt, it was resolved to call for tenders for a night-soil removal contract'
THE QUESTION OF BATBINU SHEDS. The clerk reported tbat no tenders had been received for the erection of bathing sheds at Young's Beacb.
Mr Holt expressed the opinion that it was too late in the season to consider the question, but Mr Linstrom contended that the time was ripe for consideration for next season, and he regarded the work as a necessity. Mr Richardson was tot in favour ot the work as suggested; if it were done, he said, it should be something "more decent." Discussion followed, the chairman remarking that he was in favour of the raising of a loan for salt water swimming baths.
Ultimately Mr Campbell moved and Mr Markwirk seconded that two sheds should be erected at YouDg's Beach. However, only the proposer and seconder voted in favour of the motion, which was accordingly lost.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS. The chairman drew the attention of the Hoard tu the necessity of appointing an engineer to report on
works in Station road, and the
matter of the aalt water baths and the concrete bridge on Hunua road. Mr Campbell did not aigee with the idea, and thought they should study economy more.
Mr Holt alao opposed on the principle of oconomy, but favoured consideration being given to work on the concrete bridge, Hunua road.
Un the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Holt, it was resolved to appoint Mr GLockiej annon as engineer to report on the cost of the concrete bridge and also on work to Broadway, Eliot street and ureat South road. LIBRARY.
Mr Campbell and the clerk were appointed to repoit at next meeting as to the management of the Library.
ELIOT STREET. Mr Campbell moved that Eliot Street should be completed in accordance with the sgreement entered into by the late Board and the Franklin County Council. The motion was lost, three voting for it and four against, whereupon Mr Campbell exclaimed that it was bad policy not to carry out the agreement entered into by the late Board. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr Campbell gave notice of motion that at the next meeting of the Board be would move that member should bave charge of certain work within bis own district, and thus dispense with the Works Committee. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £341 Sis 3d were passed tor payment.
Throughout the Papakura district the effect of the recent heavy rains has been serious. Some time on Saturday evening the bridge on the Hunua road, known as "Walker's bridge," was bodily carried down the stream. Traffic has been suspended and is being diverted to the boundary road known as Red Hill road. It is hoped, with the co-operation ot County Council workmen to have the road soon opened fur traffic again. The bridge which has been some years in existence was a timber structure, built on stone abutments.
