MERCER.
WAIKATO RIVEK IN FLOOD. All round Mercer, especially on tbe swampy hod adjoining tbe railway line, the effects of the flood consequent on recent rains are to be seen in a sea of yellow water, trees showing themsevks bf branches just above the level of tbe water. In many places the flooded lands are seven or eight feet deep, whilst on the eastern side of tbe railway line water has flowed down from the billy country in great volumes and has spread like a huge lake across tbe flat lands. The Waikato river is some six feet above summer level and, floating logs being numerous, launch passage after dark is somewhat risky.
A considerable quantity of flax from Lake Waikare has been barged to Mercer by tbe Waikato Shipping Company, Ltd., represent* ing no le-s than 30 tons, while from tbe Wbangamarino district about 20 tons were bandied. Tbe flax is of good quality witb healthy blades. Most of the consignment is being forwarded to Pokeno. Gutting has been abandoned for the present owing to tbe effect of the heavy rain.
