PAPAKURA.

There were exciting times late last Monday night or rather in the early hours of Tuesday in the railway camp on the Recreation Reserve when one of the workers, whose mind had become unhinged, armed himself with an axe and threatened to slaughter all and sundry. Constable Waugh was sent for and awaiting his opportunity he suddenly closed with the demented one and succeeded in overpowering him. The individual, who was a native of Servia, was later in the day taken to Auckland and was certified as a fit subject for detention in the Avondale mental hospital. J.P's in the Papakura Town District are an unknown quantity, although the township is the centre of a police district. Owing to the fact that when the services of a J. P. are required a country resident has to be called on the opinion naturally exists that the next batch of appointments made to the Bench by the Government should include the names of two or three of Papakura's leading men. ,

The Methodist Church choir held their annual picnic on Wednesday last at Mr G Wilson's bush, when they were favoured with ideal weather, the party numbering about 45, including the Pastor the Rev. W. S. Potter and choirmaster, Mr T. C. Seaton. Various games were indulged in and tea was afterwards partaken of, the ladies in charge being Mesdames Williamson, Morgan, Woodhouse, and Miss M. Johnson. Some interesting photographic groups were taken by Mr G. Hardy. Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent. Pending the appointment of a successor to Constable Waugh to take charge of the Papakura Police District, Constable Thornell, of Pukekohe, is temporanly carrying on the duties.
