RUNCIMAN.
A very pleasant social, promoted by the Rama Eama and Tuhimata Ladies' Guild, took place in " the barn " on Thursday evening; December 28th, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Kussell and family, who have recently sold their farm and are leaving the district. The building was comfortably filled, a noticeable feature being the deficiency of men in comparison to ladies, caused by so many having enlisted. After singing "God Save the King" the evening was passed in dancing, games, songs and musical items. Occasion was taken to prosent Mrs Kussell with a beautiful silver teapot, suitably inscribed, from members of the Guild. In an eloquent speech, Mr F. Langford referred to the sterling qualities of Mr and Mrs Kussell, both as neighbours and ardent workers in patriotic or any good cause to which they were always ready to lend a helping hand. A bountiful hand-round supper was provided by the ladies, the men claiming some small credit as assistants. The music, as on other occasions, was creditably supplied by Mrs Keane, of Pukekohe East. The gathering broke up about one o'clock, all having had a most enjoyable time. The children's annual picnic took place in Buckland's paddock on New Year's Day, and considering the unfavourable weather about 200 assembled. This picnic has now been held annually for just on fifty years, and is looked forward to by many as a reunion of old friends and acquaintances. Thanks to an energetic committee a very enjoyable afternoon's fun for the youngsters was provided with races, etc., practically every boy and girl receiving a prize. Special excitement was caused in the married ladies' race, Mrs Alf. Cossey and Mrs J. Walker tieing, and running it off came in exactly equal, resulting in the prize being duplicated. As in other districts the recent heavy and continued rain has had a very detrimental effect on the hay crops, most settlers suffering more or less. The fruit crop also promises to be very light this season,, especially stone fruit.; .
