PATUMAHOE

Whilst driving in company with Mr W. R. Johns into Pukekohe on Friday last, Mr W. Howard, Patumahoe's popular '• Mayor," had an escape from what might easily have proved a nasty accident. Through one of the wheels of the conveyance sinking into a trench on the road near the springs and causing the chain of the swingle-tree to snap Mr Howard was thrown out but his fall was broken by the fact that he was deposited on the back of the horse before he struck terra firma. With the exception of a few bruises and a liberal bespattering of mud "His Worship " was none the worse for his experience. Mr Johns retained his seat in the vehicle.
