MANUREWA TOWN BOARD

The usual monthly meeting of the Manurewa Town Board was held yesterday, when there were pres< nt MessrsT. J. C(rin (chaiiman), E. S. Pegler, C. Coxhead, G. Coxhead, H. V. Burton, C. H. Lupton, with the acting-cleik, Mr T. W. BtlL JELLICOE ESTATE.

A letter was received from Messrs Harrison and Grierson forwarding plans and specifications of propose I roads through Jellicoe estate, named r*ppfctmly Halsey and Jfllicoe roads.

On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Q. Coxhead, ihe Board approved of the plans and specification, subject to the inclusion of a sufficient fence on each side of one of the roads and scoria on one footpath in accordance with the Town Board's requirement.

HILL ROAD. The chairman reported that in accordance with the arrangement come to at the last meeting members met Mr Nathan on Hill road and it was decided that Mr Martin, the surveyor, should prepare a plan of the proposed work and Bubmit it to the Board. SANITARY SERVICE. Mr H J. Hawkins, of Paerata, wrote stating that owing to the Karaka Road Board refusing him the use of his present site as a depot for night soil he was not yet in a position to make any definite offer to contract for the sanitary service of Manurewa and Papakura but on receiving an offer from the joint Town Boards he would be able to provide a suitable site.

The matter was deferred until after a conference with the Papakura Town Board.

WORKS COMMITTEE. The chairman suggested that it was time that a Works Committee was appointed. Mr Pegler said that ever since the inception of the Board he had always advocated such an appointment. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Pegler, it was decided to form a committee. Messrs Corin, Lupton and G. Coxhead being appointed, as the members, the first meeting to be held on Saturday, the 6th January next.

LUPTON'S ROAD. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Corin, seconded by Mr Burton, that the six-inch pipes on Lupton's road should be altered in position and should be relaid from the northeastern corner to the western side across Russell road.

NEW BRIDGE ROAD. Some discussion took place with regard to the straightening of the road over the new bridge, and on the motion of Mr Lupton, seconded by Mr Pegler, it was resolved that the chairman and Mr Lupton should be a deputation to interview the District Engineer relative to the railway land affected by the proposed straightening of Lupton's road.

"A STORM." Mr Lupton said he wished to draw attention to a matter which he regarded as a very important one. " What is that ? " said the chairman. Mr Lupton: The special meeting called on the 7th December was not a legal meeting, the requirements of the Town Board Act riot having been complied with. At the request of Mr Lupton, the chairman read the section referred to him, the objection being as explained by Mr Lupton that he only had 3 days' notice and not 7 days' notice as required by the Act.

The chairman: It was not an illegal meeting. Mr Burton interposed, and said that as the majority confirmed the minutes the meeting was legal.

Mr Lupton did not accept that view, and contended that as the meeting was an illegal one the business done was not legal. After this little breeze the chairman asked if there was anything further to discuss.

"Yes," said Mr Lupton, "I want it recorded that the special meeting was an illegal one." Mr Burton expressed the view that a personal feeling against the late clerk was responsible for the objection raised, and the chairman concurred.

Mr Lupton : It is a very important matter. It is not a personal question DEFECTIVE CULVERTS.

Mr Lupton asked that the three culverts at Hawthorn's corner, Scott's and the creamery should receive attention. On his motion, seconded by Mr Pegler, it was resolved that the attention of the Manukau County Council be drawn to the unsatisfactory state of the culverts referred to. MISCELLANEOUS.

It was resolved that Mr Hanch l)e requested to cut the blackberries on Station road near the post office. The tender of Mr McLarnon for carting scoria was accepted at 8s per load.

Mr Burton suggested that the goods-shed at the new station should be raised higher than the present one to facilitate the handling of cargo. All agreed, and it was decided to see the District Engineer (Mr Macintosh) on the subject.
