THE MERGING QUESTION ROAD BOARD'S OVERTURES TO COUNTY At yesterday's meeting of the Franklin County Council, Messrs J. Batty, John Schlaepfer, and D. Jamieson, members of the Karaka Road Board, waited on the Council in regard to the suggested merging of the Road Board in the County and other matters.

Mr Batty believed that everyone would support the merging of the Board if Karaka was made a riding of the County and was given a member He contended that with a valuation of £400,000 and the possession of 42 miles of roads the district was entitled to direct representation on the Council. Mr Batty also asked that the road leading from Papakura to Waiau via the new bridges and the road leading from Pukekohe to Papakura via Paerata station and Karaka school should be declared County roads. Further, he made application for the Board's quany, with plant, on the WaiukuDrury road to be taken over by the council.

Messrs Schlaepfer and Jamieson supported the requests made by Mr Batty. Cr Henry asxed Mr Batty what value he placed on the quarry and plant and Mr Batty replied about £■2so.

The cierk read a statement of the council's receipts and expenditure wHhin the Boad Board's district. This showed receipts from rates for tho fire years ending March 31st next amounting to £3131 and Government subsidies £404, a total of £3535. On the expenses side plant and machinery (Earaka's quota 1 ) was set down at £779, £928 had been expended on formation work and works authorised amounted to £847, a total of £2854, leaving a credit balance in Earaka's favour of £9BO.

The chairman promised Mr Batty that the Council would thoroughly consider the suggestion that had been made, particularly as it was the council's intention to set up a committe to go into the question of forming new ridings, a similar proposal having been made as regards the Bombay part of the county.

The deputation then withdrew.
