BUCKLAND.

FARMERS' UNION MEETING INTERESTINGPRESENTATION A meeting of the Buckland branch of tne Farmers' Union was held in Hall tm Saturday, the 9th inst. there being a large attendance of members. • A letter in answer to a request tor improvements to Hamilton's road was received from the Franklin County Council, stating that the sumof £SO was to be spent in grading, etc.

The following resolution was unanimously passed, viz. : " That this meeting of farmers commends the Government for their prompt action in bringing down the new War Regulations, and, further, that we pledge ourselves to support the Government in their honest endeavours to carry out their obligations to the Imperial Government, and at the same time to ensure the preservation of law and order in the Dominion." The secretary was instructed to write to the Railway Department requesting that the platform at the Buckland railway station be asphalted. Owing to the secretary, Mr W. Jefferies, having enlisted, Mr E. Neal, at the request of the meeting, agreed to act in that position until the'annual meeting in March next. At the conclusion of the business, the president, on behalf of the members, presented Mr Jefferies with a wristlet watch ' and referred to the great interest and the large amount of work he had given to the affairs of the Union.—Councillor Wilcox and others also spoke in a similar strain.—Mr Jefferies thanked all for their good wishes and the useful present.

The Buckland school maintained its good reputation for passes at the annual proficiency examination which was held recently at Pukekohe. Six pupils sat for it, four obtaining proiiciency and two competency certificates, which reflects credit on the teachers, especially as '2O per cent more marks were required to pass this year than last.
