FRANKLIN A. & P. SOCIETY

A meeting of the Executive of the above Society was held on November 21th in the Pukekohe Borough Council Chamber, the President (Mr C. K. Lawrie) bping in the chair. OLD SHOW GROUND SEOTIONB A lengthy discussion ensued in regard to the financial position of the Society, it had only been possible to sell only two or three of the old show ground sections making a heavy strain on the Society's funds through interest mounting up in respect of the unpaid purchase money of the new show ground. No deSnite proposals were adopted but Mr R Bilkey gave notice that at the next meeting he would move that as the sections could not be disposed of at auction sales each member of the committee should be asked to buy or to secure the sale of one section or more if possible, the sections be subject to re-valuation. SHOW JUDGES. Judges, subject to acceptance of the appointments, were selected for the various classes at the forthcoming show. PROPOSED RAILWAY SUBWAY. The draft of a letter, to which the signatures of the Mayor and the the Presidents of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce and of the local branch of the Farmers' Union were attached, together with that of Mr Lawrie, which the President proposed should be forwarded to the Minister for Railways, was submitted and approved of. The letter was as follows: "To the Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister for Railways, Wellington: Sir,—On the occasion of your recent visit to Fukekohe the question of providing a sub-way under the railway line on the south side of Pukekohe station was brought to your notice by a deputation from the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and you promised to give the matter consideration. We, the undersigned, now beg most respectfully, to impress upon you the great benefit which would accrue to Pukekohe and the surrounding district by the construction of the sub-way for cattle traffic. At the present time all cattle from the district on the east side of the line being trucked at the station, have to be driven over the traffic bridge at the junction of East and King streets; this also applies to cattle from the east side being driven to and from Messrs Buckland and Sons sale yards; whilst in the case of cattle going to and from the New Zealand loan and Mercantile yards (which aro situated on the East side of the line) all the cattle from the west side have to be taken over the same bridge. This driving of the cattle over the bridge, which is the only traffic approach to the passenger station is a source of great inconvenience if not of danger, to the public generally ; more especially so is this the case on the days of the Franklin A. and P. Association's show, when the traffic across the bridge, both to the station and to the show grounds, is particularly great. The number and size of the sales is very considerable, and is all the time increasing, and the trouble becoming more acute. The proposed sub-way, if constructed, would enable all cattle to be taken that way, and so save great congestion of and inconvenience to the general traffic which must inevitably take place on sale days and show days under present conditions. We would, therefore, ask you to give this matter your most careful attention and support."
