RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL

Mr Johnstone Re-elected Chairman.

The statutory annual meeting of the Raglan County Council was held at Ngaruawahia on Wednesday last prior to the ordinary bi-monthly meeting, the members present being Messrs C. Johnstone (chairman), W. Wilson, C. C. Otway, 8. Eyre, 0. W. Balfe, W. Gibbison, A. McKinnon, W. Seavill, J. A. Lowry, D. Moore, A. Cobourne, with the clerk, Mr H. Marsland. ELECTION 01 CHAIRMAN. Cr McKinnon proposed the reelection of Cr Campbell Johnstone, stating that he had given satisfaction during the six years he had held office. Cr Cobourne seconded. Being of the opinion that a change might do good Cr Lowry proposed as an amendment that Cr Otway be elected to the chair. In support thereof he said that his nominee had a wide knowledge of matters that would assist him in the capacity of chairman. Cr Moore seconded. On the amendment being put to the meeting by Mr Marsland, Crs Lowry, Otway and Moore voted "for," and Crs Wilson, Balfe, Gibbison, McKinnon, Seavill, Cobourne and Cr Johnstone voted "against." The original motion was then put to the meeting and carried, the last seven members mentioned, with the exception of Cr Johnstone, giving support thereto. Cr Johnstone was thereupon declared elected and on taking the chair returned thanks for his reelection. COMMITTEES. With Cr Moore added to tho Finance Committee both the old Committees remain as heretofore, viz., Finance Committee: The chairman and Crs Seavill, Lowry, McKinnon and Moore. Harbour Committee : The chairman, and Crs Balfe, Gibbison, Seavill and Otway. NEXT MEETING. A question asked by Cx Otway elicited the information from the chairman that the next meeting of the Council would be held at Baglan. INSPECTION 01' ROADS. The chairman suggested that for the knowledge of councillors it would be advisable for an inspection of the roads in the county to be inspected. —No action was taken. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr W. L. Davies. of Te Hirua, requested the Council to place in repair the road leading to Sections B 12 and 14, Block 14, Owaroa, S.D. and Cr Otway expressed an intention of asking the council later in the meeting to do the work. Permission was granted Mr A. Cathcart (Onewhero), to erect a gate on the inner end of the BrewsterSlater Boad.

engineer's REPORT.

A resume of the work done during the past two months was set out in the Engineer's, Mr J. W. Civil's report as follows: In connection with the Onewhero to Wairamarama grant of £3OOO Messrs McSheen Bros, had started to crush the metal and the road was being prepared for the metal to be laid thereon. Twenty chains of Messrs Allans' and Eyre's road had been laid off in preparation for formation work, to start from the main road and for laying three nine-inch culverts. Bepairs and improvements to the Klondyke and Wairamarama roads had been completed. A pair of horses were now available for ploughing, scooping and grading. Bepairs and improvements to roads in the Pukokawa riding had been made possible by the purchase of a horse, plough and scoop. In the Whangape riding—Ramsey's road, from the junction of Bregmen—Churchill road to Mrßamsey's boundary, a distance of 40 chains, had been laid off so that the surfaceman could proceed with work thereon. Pipes for culverts had been landed at the Glenmurray landing. Work in connection with the "Pukekawa to Bregmen's landing" £ for £, had been laid off and would be proceeded with on the completion of the work on Ramsey's road. Timber to be used in strengthening the Glenmurray landing wharf was in hand. With the chairman's sanction a twocylinder road roller had been ordered.

The treasurer's report showed European general rates for 191G—17 to be outstanding as follows in the different ridings on November 17 th : Onewhero, £I4OO 17s sd; Pukekawa, £4Bl lis 2d. The balances available for works in each riding on November 17th were as follows: Onewhero £751 7s 2d; Pukekawa, £lB9 6s lid.
