PUKEKAWA.

- At the Pukekohe Police Court last Thursday, before Messrs C. K. Lawrie and J. T. Stembridge, J.P.'s, a charge of cruelty to animals was. heard against Osmond Jones, contractor, of Pukekawa, and Stevenson Lee, his employee. Neither defendants appeared but they were represented by Mr F. W. Shortland, of • Tuakau. The facts of the case, as related by Constable Thornell, were that the horses, which were engaged in carting cream to Tuakau station, were noticed in the township by Constable Taylor with sore shoulders, from which they were evidently suffering pain. For the defence, Mr Shortland explained that the defendant Jones was ill at the time and Lee was inexperienced in the management of horses. Jones was fined £1 and 7s costs and Lee 10s and 7s costs.
