PAPAKURA.
MB D. B. STEWART ENTERTAINED. Last Thursday evening Mr D. B. Stewart, the late chairman of the Town Board, was entertained at a complimentary dinner at the Papakura Hotol by the members and exmembers of the Board Mr A. Willis occupied the chair. The gathering was somewhat unique in the way that every Board elected since the formation of the district into a township was represented by one or more members.
After the usual patriotic toasts, the chairman, on behalf of those present, made a presentation of a smoker's companion to Mr Stewart, and referred tor his long and faithful services as a member of the Board, dwelling upon the various reforms he had advocated and supported and expressing the regret of all that he had decided to withdraw for the time being from the Board. Mr G. Mac Murray, a member of the first Board elected, referred to the difficulties of the early days, the small revenue received and the amount of good and useful work done by the early Boards. Mr Sam Clark spoke in a similar strain, recounting some of his humorous experiences as a member and reminding those present that three and sixpence per chain was considered a good price for road formation in his time.
Mr Stewart replied, expressing his appreciation of the honour done hiui and regretting that business prevented him from continuing as a member of the Board
Messrs Cole, Richardson, D. vV. Jones, E. D. McLennan and D. Wilson also spoke and a very pleasant gathering was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem
As the result of the bursting of the tyre last evening of a motor-car in which he was travelling, Mr S. L. Bygrave, the popular proprietor of the Papakura Hotel, was thrown out and sustained a concussion of the brain. This afternoon he is still unconscious, and his condition is reported to be serious. The accident happened at Takanini.
After a residence in the district for the past 35 years Mrs P. Rouselle has left Papakura tor Auckland, where she will in future reside.
. A complimentary social is to be tendered by the Papakura Send-off Committee on Friday evening next in the Parish Hall to Pvt J. Parmenter, who is on his final leave. A good musical programme will be submitted, followed by dancing.
