PATUMAHOE

EAILWAY LINE CELEBRATION. A railway ball to mark the advent of the first engine to Fatumahoe was held in the Hall on the 17th inst. There was a large attendance, and a first-class evening's dancing was provided under th« capable organisation of Messrs W. Howard and F. Kavanagh. As a fitting celebration to the occasion a " train " drawn by the aforementioned engine left Paerata at 7..'i0 p.m. with passengers for the ball and at various points along the line others were picked up. The train most accommodatingly waited till the last of the dancers had had had their lling, leaving Patumahoo on the return journey about 2 30 a.m.

Excellent music was provided by Messrs Howard, Hunter and Pleydell, and the duties of MC. were successfully carried out by Mr (J. Sheppard. During the evening Mr Sheppard, on behalf of the residents, presented appropriate souviners to Mr and Mrs F. J. Cuthbert on the occasion of their departure from the district. In presenting the tokens of respect Mr Sheppard spoke of the appreciation Mr and Mrs Cuthbert were held in Patumahoe, and expressed regret at their departure. Mr Cuthbert suitably responded. The gifts consisted of a gold medal for Mr Cuthbert and a silver-mount-ed handbag for Mrs Cuthbert, both being supplied and engraved by Mr W. Wright, jeweller, of Pukekohe. The proceeds of the ball are to go towards a presentation fund for soldiers leaving the district, and in this respect the fund benefitted by close on £ 1.
