MERCER.
A correspondent writes as follows under the heading of " How a gold fish was caught" " A rather interesting incident in Mercer a day or two ago. A sportsman, having a young spaniel to train, took a walk along the bank of the Waikato Biver with his gun., Presently a black shag came along. One shot brought it down about a chain from the river bank and the dog retrieved it to the shore. Then the sports man coaxed the dog to carry the bird to his home. A few minutes after their arrival the lady of the house said " look it is still alive." On picking the shag up there came out of its mouth a fish about four inches long, of the gold fish species. The fish was alive and the shag dead. It is now a pet of the house quite safe from the disaster of the shag pest."
