PAPAKURA.

A programme of works which will \yjmiJorabiy improve the roads in tho town district, including the removal of grass from water channels and the lowering of the footpath on Cave's hill in front of Mr Johnson's property to bring it more in keeping with the grade of the footpath in that road, has been put in hand, and already Broadway presents quite a clean appearance compared with its former state.

The Papakura Patriotic League met on Thursday evening last to complete arrangements in connection with the forthcoming performance of "Trial bv Jury," to be staged in Papakura on the 29th inst. by the Manurewa Musical Society to assist a patriotic cause. The treasurer, Mrs A. Willis, reported having received from the Papakura Tennis Club,' through Mrs D. Wilson, a donation of JE9 10s 4d. The secretary was instructed to acknowledge the donation with thanks.

Several trophies presented by Mr S. L. Bygrave and Constable Waugh to the Papakura Rifle Club will be competed for to-morrow week on the Takanini range. Corporal Harold Wilson presented himself to the Auckland Medical Board for examination recently and was declared to be unfit for further military service outside the Dominion.

Several matters of comsiderable importance to the district, deferred from the last ordinary meeting of the Town Board were dealt with at a special meeting of the Board held on Wednesday evening and attended by all the members with the exception of Mr William Richardson who is in Wellington. The business was transacted in committee, the Board sitting from 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 pm. The question of a sanitary service for the Papakura and Manurewa districts, conjoined, was debated, a decision being arrived at to meet delegates from the Manurewa district to discuss the matter. A recommendation that the clerk's salary should be revised to meet present conditions was dealt with and the desired change made. It was also arranged to take a census of the area proposed to be defined as a borough as a first step to the realisation of the scheme.

Sergeant Herbert Geissler, the second son of Mr and Mrs Geissler, of Papakura, is home on final leave. His unit, the 20th Mounted Rifles, may leave at any time and their addresses were taken so that on receipt of orders they could promptly be recalled. Sergeant Geissler joined the 15th Reinforcement but was kept back for service in camp at Featherston, but was recently transferred to the 20th Mounteds.

The appointment of a permanent surfaceman has been deeded upon by the Papakura Town Board and applications for the position are invited by advt. in this issue.
