THE CENSUS.
Franklin's Great Progress.
The figures of the recent census for Franklin County, including the Borough of Pukekohe and the town districts of Mercer, Tuakau and Waiuku, have now been completed by the Census Enumerator (Mr W. Coster\ who has been good enough to furnish us with details. The returns testify to the development of the district, the population having increased by 1914 since the previous census, viz, from 8996 to 10,910. At the previous census the present Franklin County formed part of Manukau County and with a total population of 10,180 for the then combined county the present Manukau portion was credited with 7184 as against the more southern end's (now Franklin) total of 8996. Manukau's population has increased from 7184 to 9130, the growth being accordingly very similar to that of Franklin. An interesting feature of Franklin's figures is the extent of the population in the Pukekohe District, Pukekohe borough combined with the Fukekohe riding. Pukekohe borough also has the distinction of being the only district in which the female inhabitants outnumber the
male sex. The actual figures are as follows : FBANKLIN COUNTY. 0 y 1 , i si % = n £ * Pukekohe Borough 154* 756 (89 Awhitu Riding ... 753 410 343 Drury Riding ... 1500 7.56 744 Hunua Riding (excluding Maungatawhiri outlying portion) 389 209 1«<» Mauku Riding ... 1216 674 542 Mercer Riding tineluding Mercer Town District & Maungatawhiri outlying portion of Hunua Riding) ... 1139 595 544 Pukekohe Riding (including Tuakau Town District) ... 2236 11" lOo'.' Waipipi Riding ... 756 394 362 Waiuku Riding ... 733 m \ Waiuku T. District 643 J ) Totals 10,910 5693 5217 In the Waiuku Town District the population of 643 is made up of 337 males and 306 females. Tuakau and Mercer Town Districts, including in the ridings as above, have populations of 450 and 354 respectively. In the figures as set out for the Mauku Riding, the Karaka Road District's quota is 486 (264 males and 222 females) as compared with 396 in 1911. THE 1911 CENBUB.
Owing to the fact that the taking of the 1911 census was on a somewhat different system to that of the recent census a truly accurate comparison of the totals for the different areas cannot be furnished. The totals in the following table for Awhitu, Waipipi and Waiuku are accordingly combined as with Waipipi having been credited five years ago with a population of 1203, some 200 of which was subsequently merged into the Awhitu Riding when formed, it is apparent that Waipipi's total for 1911 must have included a proportion that should have been allotted to Waiuku. The increase as given below for Hunua, it may be mentioned, is based on the supposition that the population of Hunua " outlying," included in the Mercer riding's total as above, is 150. Subject to these reservations the following figures can be accepted as fairly reliable, viz.: Population. Increase. Ml 1911-16 Pukekohe Borough 1150 395 Awhitu ) Waipipi \ ... 2443 442 Waiuku * Drury 1268 232 Hunua 489 50 Mauku 1028 188 Mercer 915 74 Pukekohe and Tuakau (excluding Pukekohe boro') 1(03 066 Totals ... BW6 1911 MANUKAU COUNTY. The following figures of population are forthcoming for districts in Manukau County, viz. : Manurewa Town and Koad Districts 757, (males 386, females 371), increase 334. Papakura Road District 577 (males 300, females 277), decrease 30. Papakura Town District 641 (males 320, females 321), increase 188. Wairoa Road District 1022 i,males 541, females 481), increase 176.
