SOLDIERS FAREWELLED.
Despite the rainy weather fully 60 couples attended a social and dance given in the Oddfellows' Hall last night to Privates T. Lauer, W. Lauer, W. Boase, M. Ryan, B. Penny, A. Reynolds and " Joe" Wilson, members of the 20th Reinforcements, who arrived home on final leave on Fiiday last, and will leave Pukekohe by a troop train which is timed to leave Auckland at 10.20 to-morrow night. An apology was read from Lance-Corpl. A. G. Hutchings, Puni, also from Mr A. B. Barter, Pukekohe, for their inability to attend. During the evening His Worship the Mayor (Mr H. G. R. Mason), in an appropriate speech presented to each of the men a safety razor on behalf of the Pukekohe Soldiers' Farewell Committee, and from the Pukekohe East Tennis Club he handed a wristlet watch, pipe and tobacco pouch to four of its members, namely, Privates T. and W. Lauer, A. Reynolds and B. Penny as a memento of pleasant associations. The recipients suitably returned thanks. Mr C. K. Lawrie and Warrant Officer Hatt gave recruiting speeches urging all eligibles to come forward. At intervals the following musical items were given : Songs, Misses J. Aldridge, A. McShane, Messrs W. T. Jones, A. Webb, and recitations by Mr Holdsworth. Timely dance music wis supplied by Mra Keane, of Pukekohe East, and extras were contributed by Miss E. Fitness, aud Messrs C. Weston and G.
