TUAKAU.
A handicap shooting competition to decide this year's holder of the Foley Cup from amongst members of the Tuakau Rod and Gun Club was held under favourable conditions in Mr A. H. Tapper's paddock last week, when Mr 0. Booker (secretary), 10yds, secured nine birds out of a possible 10, and was adjudged the winner from amongst six competitors. Mr J. McNeil was the previous holder, and is the only member to have held it for two years in succession. The conditions provide that to win the trophy outright it has to be secured either three seasons in succession or five times at intervals.
'A painful accident befel Mr Geo. Leaman on his farm on Friday last. He was carrying a slash-hook on his shoulder on his way to the bush when accidentally he struck the back of his disengaged hand against the blade, which made a deep incision that was attended to by Mr A. H. Tapper, chemist As a result he will be incapacitated for several weeks. The straying cattle nuisance is becoming a serious menace to the pedestrian traffic on Dominion road, where the footpath on the southern side is becoming seriously impaired as a result, it is urged by the ratepayers concerned that some action should be taken, to prevent a continuance of the evil. As it only remains for the Department concerned to Gazette the £12,000 loan to permit of its expenditure, it is considered desirable by many that consideration should be given to the question of beautifying the township by planting desirable trees therein. It is claimed that the main street at least should be dealt with in this manner as it leads to the river and is the boulevard of Tuakau.
On Tuesday evening of last week, Mr W. Dyer, who has enlisted in the 23rd Reinforcements, was farewelled in the Methodist Church at a social gathering, a large company being present. Vocal solos were rendered by Mrs G. D. Hunter, Misses A. Long, Leaman (2), E. Bycroft, and O. Revell; a duet by the Misses Long and Leaman; and recitations by the Misses E. Long and I. De6ble and Messrs F. Souster, G. Revell, Wesley Long and the Rev. J. B. Suckling, of Pukekohe. The guest of the evening acknowledged the farewell in a happy little response.
