PATUMAHOE

" OFF TO THE FRONT." SOLDIERS FAREWELLED. A very successful social took place at Patumahoe Public Hall on Thursday evening last, when the residents of the township and of the district for miles around gathered to say good-bye to two of the local " boys " who were on their final leave before going to the front to fight for their liberty and freedom, viz,, Piivates

Herbert Irwin and William Bellingham, of the 19th Reinforcements. The company present included several Pukekohe and Waiuku residents. The function was organised by Mr W. Howard, the worthy " Mayor of Patumahoe," who presented the guests with a wristlet watch each. In handirg them the gifts, Mr Howard wished them a safe return and promised them a fitting welcome on their re-appearance in Patumahoe. Both the soldiers suitably expressed thanks for the gifts ana for the pleasant evening that had been arranged for their benefit. Music was supplied by Miss V. Bailey and Messrs Howard and Hunter, and dancing was carried on till the early hours of Friday morning A very nice supper was provided, and the gathering was the most successful held in Patumahoe for some time, its success being mostly due to the untiring efforts of Mr Howard and Mr Kavanagh.
