BUCKLAND.

The annual meeting of the Buckland tennis club was held in the hall on Monday evening the 16th inst. A fair number of members being present. A vote of sympathy with the president, Mr Avery, who has had a brother killed at the front, was carried in silence, all members standing. The business of the meeting was then gone on with, Mr Avery presiding. The balancesheet was read showing a credit balance of £2 6s 2d. It was decided to keep the club going for the ensuing year, though nearly all the male members had enlisted. The following officers were elected : President, Mr Avery; secretary, Miss Neal; treasurer, Mr W. Jefferies; vicepresidents, Messrs Melville, Home, Wily, Pulman, Civil, Parker, Greenaway, Piggott, Appleby, Wolfe, Hamilton, Graham ; managing committee, officers ex officia, and Misses Davy aid Allan, Messrs Melville and Bilkey, A working bee was arranged to tidy up court, etc, ready for the opening day (Saturday, November 4th;. It was decided to send invitations to all adjacent clubs to attend the opening.

A farewell social to Private W, Hewitt was held in the hall on the 18ih inst. but owing to only 2-1

hours notice, and the rough weather, the attendance was limited. Mr E. Allan presided and among the speakers were Councillor Wilcox, Messrs H. H. D. Wily, J. K. Hamilton, and E. Piggott. A very pleasant evening was spent, with songs, recitations, etc., and at the close all joined in singing Auld Lang Syne, and gave three cheers for Private Hewitt, who in a short speech thanked all for their good wishes. A meeting of the Buckland Branch of the Farmers' Union was held on Saturday night. A resolution supporting the Executive in their action as to the price of butter was carried. Arrangements were also made for the collection of eggs for the Belgian Fund. A full report of the meeting will appear in our next issue.
