MAUKU.
CONFIDENCE IN SCHOOLMASTER COUET CASE SEQUEL. At the quarterly meeting of the Mauku School Committee, held in the schoolroom on Friday evening, the following members being present: Messrs A. Franklin (chairman), J. Gillon, M. Crispe and A. Bell (clerk), the chairman referring to the recent " caning case " said he wished to give Mr Gutry (the headmaster) an opportunity to clear up a few matters which he had not previously had an opportunity of doing through no defence being required when the action was heard in Court.
Mr Gutry said he felt it his duty to give some particulars to the committee regarding some of the statements that had been made. In reference to the suggestion that he had read a book to the children entitled the "Life of a Criminal " he wished to give that an emphatic denial as he had never seen such a book. . The book he had read and which was evidently the one in question was entitled " Eric, or Little by Little," a tale of the Bosyln school by Edmund Farrar. It was dedicated to G. E. L Cotton, DD, Lord Bishop of Calcutta. He had used that book in connection with incidents that had occurred on the schoolground to give moral lessons to the children. It could be read by young or old with good results, as the title would imply, and he would be pleased to lend it to any of the committee to read. Mr Gutry then dealt with various other matters in connection with the case. Members of the committee expressed appreciation at Mr Gutry's explanations and gave him to understand that they had the fullest confidence in his mode of conducting the school and looking after the welfare of the children.
