Rifleman Jas. Pendergrast Rifleman James Pendergrast, reported killed in action in France on September 15th, was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs John Pendergrast of Pokeno Valley and was 29 years of age. Rifleman Pendergrast left in the Advance Guard of the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and after being in Egypt some months was incapacitated with dysentery and upon his recovery rejoined his comrades who participated in the fight againit the Arabs, afterwards leaving for France where he fell. He lived in Pokeno practically all his life and was educated at the Pokeno Public School. Prior to enlisting ho took a keen interest in farming having purchased a property just before the outbreak of the war.
