HUNUA.
On Friday week last the public of Hunua assembled with the intention of farewelling a former resident who has answered the call of Empire, viz, Mr W. Barter, who for some years resided here with his brother, Mr H. Barter, but who more recently- has been farming iu the Taranaki district and who went into camp seme few months ago. He was last week up on final leave and in conspquence the people of Huuua t< ok advantage of the occasion to bid him adieu and to wish him " God Speed." The pleatu e, however, was denied tluin as Mr Barter had unexpectedly to leave Nevertheless the social as arranged was held and during the evening Mr T. J. Lnckwood, J.P., in a neat little speech, explained the object of the gathering. He then asked Mr H. Baitvr to convsy to his brother the best wishes of those assembled and he also requested him to give to his brother a wristlet watch as a token of remembrance Mr Barter suitably responded. Dancing was indulged in most of the evening. Mr H. McConnel presided at the piano and Mr W. Hirst efficiently acted as MC. Extras were played by Mrs McKenzie and Miss E. McConnel.
General sympathy is being extended to the Hunua Missionary, Mr G. Cox, who this week has received word that his brother, Private Lionel Cox, has been killed in France in action.
