HAMILTON'S DEVIATION SCHEME. COUNCILLORS AND RATEPAYERS CONFER. Owing to a misunderstanding, as to the date, in connection with the Ratepayers' meeting held to discuss the proposed deviation scheme on the 23rd ult., which resulted in the the chairman and other members of the Raglan County Council not being present, it was deemed advisable to convene another meeting, and accordingly such took place on Monday last when the following members of the Council were in attendance, viz., Crs Campbell Johnston (chairman), Eyre, Lowry and Moore. Cr Johnston, on being voted to the chair, explained the details of the loan proposal and the position in connection with the proposed doviation, which was received with much satisfaction. - The engineer's estimate of the cost of the proposed deviation is £I4OO, including compensation. And in the earlier stages |of the controversy the ratepayers were under the impression that it would bo necessary to raise a loan of that amount, but now the position presents a much more favourable outlook from a ratepayers' point of view, the sum actually required to be found being only £6OO. The following reductions are responsible for the reduced sum required, viz , the metal intended to be placed on the old gully road but authorised to be transferred to the proposed deviation, £SOO, donation subscribed by those favouring the deviation £2OO, aud compensation generously waived by Mr Cameron £IOO, making a total of £BOO, which sum deducted from the engineer's estimate leaves £6OO. The chairman, while accepting the guarantee of the approximate sum of £2OO in donations, did not deem it advisable to reduce the amount of the loan proposal to come before the ratepayers on the 21st inst, by that amount as it would incur extra expense, but thought the voters could be advised of the reduction and Cr Moore promised to assist in making the posicion understood. Thus while the proposed loan is for £9OO the actual sum required is only £6OO. The chairman expressed the opinion that while personally it did not concern him, he thought the ratepayers would be well advised if they voted for the proposal and more especially when they considered the fact that they were all agreed as to which was the better road. Thauks to the chairman and councillors for their attendance was accorded and it was recognised that the able and impartial manner in which the facts had been presented would have a most beneticial effect in clearing away doubts that ex isted in the minds of many.
